Acura has always been an automaker to focus on premium safety features. While airbags may never be the most flashy technology in a vehicle, having high-quality airbags is absolutely essential. Part of Acura’s efforts when it comes to improving safety is making airbags more technologically advanced than ever, and these efforts were rewarded by Popular Science in its latest 2020 “Best of What’s New” awards for the new front passenger airbags in the 2021 Acura TLX sport sedan.

“Grand Award” Winner

The Popular Science “Best of What’s New” awards focuses on human ingenuity and technological innovation. To be selected as a “Best of What’s New” winner, a product must demonstrate a significant step forward in its product category. Furthermore, the publication chooses “Grand Award” winners that span multiple categories, and the airbags in this new Acura car took home the prize in this category as well.

Groundbreaking New Airbag Design

So what exactly makes the airbags in the 2021 Acura TLX worthy of such recognition? This airbag represents a major step forward in airbag design, and it is the world’s first passenger airbag intended to address the risk of severe brain trauma that is associated with frontal collisions. It is intended to reduce head and neck injuries by better controlling the front passenger’s head in certain types of crashes.

In addition to being available in the 2021 Acura TLX sport sedan, the airbags will also appear in the new Acura MDX three-row SUV, set to available at our dealership early next year.
